What is Erasmus+?

An overview of Erasmus+.

Body

Text

Erasmus+ is the European Union's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe, with nearly 40 years of impact on the personal and professional growth of over 16 million people. The budget and focus of this programme changes every 8 years.

2021–2027 Erasmus+ Programme

The current programme focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions, and promoting young people's participation in democratic life, with an estimated budget of over €26 billion.

2028–2032 Erasmus+ Programme

The proposal for the new programme is already on the table with a budget of €40.8 billion, with a bigger focus on skills (building a Union of Skills) and early age mobilities (including pupils and apprentices), while keeping priorities such as social inclusion, green and digital transitions, civil engagement, and European identity.

Another key difference is that the new programme will also include the European Solidarity Corps.

More information about the proposal and ESN's recommendations can be found here.

What is Erasmus+ for me?

Erasmus+ offers a wide range of opportunities for students and young adults. Here are the main ones:

Studying Abroad Exchange

In this exchange you can study between 2 and 12 months in another country without needing to attend your home university classes.

Your university has a list of partner universities where you can go for a semester or a full year. Because you take similar classes, you don't need to redo the courses you missed while abroad.

In one sentence: you spend part of a year in another country, study there (and have a lot of fun), and come back to continue your studies as if you never left.

The complete information about exchange mobilities can be found on each university's International Relations website (check the Universities section of this website for contact information).

Erasmus+ Student Mobility for Traineeships (SMT)

In this type of exchange, you can complete a traineeship (internship) abroad for 2 to 12 months while remaining enrolled at your home university.

Your university allows you to carry out a professional traineeship at a host organization abroad (such as a company, NGO, research center, or institution). The traineeship is approved in advance through a Learning Agreement for Traineeships, so the work you do abroad is recognized as part of your studies and you do not lose academic progress.

In one sentence: you spend part of your academic year gaining practical work experience in another country, develop professional and intercultural skills, and return to continue your studies as if you had completed that period at home.

The complete information about traineeship mobilities can be found on each university's International Relations website.

Short-Term Mobilities

These mobilities are usually organized by private organizations or NGOs around a theme related to one of the main Erasmus+ priorities. They last between 5 and 30 days and are a great opportunity to meet people from different cultures, travel affordably, and learn new things.

Some opportunities open for Romanian students can be found in these Facebook groups: Erasmus+ projects, Erasmus+ project opportunities.

Erasmus Mundus

Mundus is a selection of joint master programmes across different fields and countries throughout Europe. Most degrees offer scholarships for the best students, though each programme has its own selection and scholarship process.

The degrees included in the programme can be found here.

European Solidarity Corps (ESC)

ESC is a platform that offers young people the opportunity to volunteer in projects all over the world. Projects last between 2 and 12 months, with around 30–38 hours of work per week. But you are not working for free — participants receive free food, free accommodation, and pocket money to spend however they like.

More information can be found on the official website.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Erasmus+ supports vocational education and training institutions with financial support. VET opportunities are open to young people across Europe, with the application process depending on each organizing institution.

More information can be found here.

Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe (EPALE)

EPALE is a European platform that gathers professionals engaged in adult education across Europe. It was created to address challenges in adult education and primarily supports providers of adult learning.

More information can be found here.

Erasmus Skills

The Erasmus Skills project supports the reintegration of exchange students and helps them identify the skills and abilities gained during mobility. On the Erasmus Skills website you can find the list of skills you can gain and take an assessment to identify your own.

Erasmus Intern

Created by ESN International, this platform helps young people find internships based on their skills, studies, and passions — across many fields, countries, and experience levels. All opportunities can be found here.

Erasmus Careers

This platform is the main result of the ErasmusJobs initiative, aiming to ensure that competencies gained during mobility are recognized by both students and employers. Here you can find job offers, explore your learning journey, and discover what competences your Erasmus+ experience brought you.

All information can be found here.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs

This programme helps aspiring European entrepreneurs gain the skills needed to start or successfully run a small business. New entrepreneurs exchange knowledge and business ideas with an experienced entrepreneur, collaborating together for 1 to 6 months.

All information can be found here.

DiscoverEU

This programme is created for 18-year-olds who want to explore and travel across Europe. Participants receive a free Interrail travel pass for sustainable transport such as trains, along with discounts on accommodation, culture, sports, local transport, and other services.
